Grand Unified Theory
This post is the condensation of a rant. The conclusions are:
- luck ftw
- social engineering ftw
- forgive yourself
- have no expectations (mostly)
- have fun (if you can)
- be loved by someone
- love someone
The central observation of this piece is that we are in control of so little (circumstantially, sometimes, nothing).
When you are born some important things are predetermined:
- talent
- looks
- family
Some are not, notably:
- environment + school
- affluence
Personality and time, and by some extension friends are in overlap.
These factors largely determine who you are in life, what you do and why you do things. I'd like to say this is what makes up a human. Some career paths require an optimal condition to thrive in, which are often not achieved by many.
For example, without talent one cannot advance respectably in math (probably untrue now though). With talent, one needs varying amount of hard work (but invariably some). Gaining skill is arguably a bit different. I would say it has much more to do with practice, which is dependent on time.
Continuing with a different example, without looks you can't attract certain groups of people at all (looksmaxxing only goes so far). With, though, now personality comes into play (though limited). IMO, empirically, most relationships are mostly decided by looks. Essentially, if we had access to all humans in the world, we could get away with applying Gale-Shapely to match relationships. How successful would that be?
Last important thing is personality: characteristics, disposition, etc. I think some of these can be learned, changed or manipulated. Some can't - for example emotions are tricky to deal with.
All this buildup is for this paragraph. You are a human. You can probably be benchmarked in those various areas. Imagine there are a lot of us. Someone will benchmax you. Someone is you, but better. So what are you here for then?
I'd say just fun. Ideally you make money off of what you enjoy doing and then spend time on your other hobbies. Of course, reality does not sympathize. You work to get money, which you then use to do what you want. What if you don't want to do anything though? Well, then you're fucked.
Then there's friends. Friends are probably people you have the realest fun with. Importantly, though, they are people who you can talk to - and talk to you.
Then there's love. There's just something so sacred about it. It really is precious. I like the kind described in Deadpool: "your crazy matches my crazy." Plus, I'd say you just get each other without needing to say too much.
That's about it, in a nutshell.
