Design
Designs need to be well thought out. If you get it right, it is easy to scale, optimize and add features. I didn't quite understand this when I read some of FreeBSD's design philosophy and code, but after seeing some Linux subsystems, it makes sense.
Not sure about only downsides of only designing performant systems. Maybe it's hard to integrate later on?
